From a Campfire to a Professional Garage
The South Bend Bike Garage began in 2019 with an act of generosity and community spirit. Founded by Zach and Holly VanDeman, a couple from Bloomington, Indiana who were temporarily living in South Bend, the idea was inspired by their experience with a community-based bicycle cooperative back home. They believed South Bend could benefit from the same kind of inclusive, people-powered bike space.
The Bike Garage first opened in a small building on the Near Northwest Side, near the corner of Portage and California Avenue. With only a handful of passionate volunteers—and no heat or air conditioning—winter nights often meant gathering around a campfire to stay warm while fixing bikes for neighbors.
When Zach and Holly’s time in South Bend came to an end, they passed the torch to another couple, Dustin and Colleen New. As the organization grew, so did its needs. Together with Holy Cross College, the Bike Garage moved into the former St. Joseph High School building on US-933 and Angela Boulevard. This new space allowed the team to expand operations, build out professional Park Tool workstations, and stock a full inventory of parts, tires, and accessories.
Over time, the Bike Garage added a truck and mobile trailer to support community events across the city—offering free repairs, education, and hands-on help at local gatherings. Volunteers also launched youth programs through partnerships with Riding for Focus and the Outride Foundation, connecting kids with the joy and confidence of riding bikes.
In 2025, the South Bend Bike Garage began its next chapter in downtown South Bend, relocating to 119 W. Wayne Street. Our new space sits at the heart of the city—within walking distance of the library, local businesses, and bike routes—providing an accessible, welcoming hub for anyone who wants to ride, repair, or get involved. The move marks an exciting step forward in our mission to make bicycles a life-changing force for transportation, health, and community connection in South Bend.
The South Bend Bike Garage is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, governed by a small working board and powered entirely by volunteers. Together, our team runs the shop, delivers community programs, and keeps the wheels turning for cyclists of all ages and backgrounds.
